After seeing Stewart's comment, I definitely see a resemblance to Lukas for the top one and Lucas on the bottom one...right? (i hope...) Was the purpose to put an American feel to these men now? Because that's pretty cool, and it's nice to see that you are expanding more and away from just drawing Asian dudes. The shadowing on the top one confuses me because the light is hitting the hat on the top right, yet that side of the face is shaded darker...as for the bottom piece, the mustache is pretty uneven so you might want to fix that. Awesome job Michael!
Since ms mcbride didn't think my above comment sufficed, let me expand...
I really can see Staines in the bottom one-- so your art is doing two things for me: 1) showing you can draw from observation, especially the face and convey who it is, and 2) putting your twist on an otherwise normal portrait shot.
The one above with Lukas is more of a transition piece for me between your first styles of work (with the characters in the background and lack of color), but the different angle of the face feels like you're going from something old and stationary to something new and more lively.
Specifically I can only see a couple points i'd critique-- on Lukas.. the hat's strap thing that holds the hat on his head... kinda confused me and made me think he had a "strap on beard" or somthing like that. The other part was that on Lucas Staine's face, I feel like the hat is sitting too high on his head? But then again that may just be my lack of being cultured and knowing how things really look!
Alrighty, I forgot your concentration..... -_- but based on the two photos, me thinks I get the jist. The top black and white one is really good. The shading technique with the lines adds some sort of Michael Chen style (so good job). I like the bottom one, but not as much as the first, for it's cartoony/graphic feel with the simplistic and clean lines. Somehow I feel as though the hat was drawn at different times that the body since it's shading is a lot more lighter (but who cares, right). No one has said this yet, but I'm just wondering why all of your pieces have an Asian dude dead straight in the middle of the page. Dunno, I just imagine Mrs.McB shooting me in the face if I did that. But! could be your style and cool way of doin things. Again, I forgot your concentration so sorry 'bout that. I recommend maybe having the Asian dude or dudes in a scene or something so you can stray away from the background + Asian dude on page thing goin on (for I think all the past pieces). Finally going to end this: Good Job Michael for successfully mastering how to draw Asian dudes :-)
Knowing those are based off of lucas and lukas, I think these turned out awesome! They look like you really mixed up the usual style of your work.
